Choosing an English test should begin with the course requirements, not with rumours about which test is easier. This briefing compares IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and Duolingo English Test from a practical application-file perspective, with a 6-week preparation rhythm and document checklist.

Start from requirements, not which test feels easiest

The safest UK and Australia application method is to start with the official English language requirements for each target course. Check accepted tests, whether online or home-based versions are accepted, component requirements and expiry rules.

Build an acceptance matrix for each target course, marking IELTS, PTE and Duolingo as accepted, not accepted or needs confirmation.

IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo: compare real use cases

IELTS is more traditional, PTE is fully computer-based, and Duolingo is usually online with flexible booking. Students differ in typing speed, listening fatigue and comfort speaking to a computer.

Acceptance rules are course-specific. Some schools accept several tests, while individual faculties or professional programmes may be stricter.

Document checks: small mistakes cause big delays

Use the passport name exactly when booking. Name mismatches can be slow to correct near a deadline.

Track test date, result date and expiry date against offer conditions, enrolment deadlines, CAS or school portal upload deadlines.

A simple 6-week preparation rhythm

Week 1: diagnostic test, confirm accepted tests, and identify the weakest component. Weeks 2-3: daily listening and reading, two writing tasks per week, and structured speaking feedback.

Weeks 4-5: add timed practice and an error log. Week 6: complete two full mocks, then focus on sleep, timing and stable output.

Manage expectations with conservative wording

English evidence is only one part of an application. Meeting the minimum English requirement does not guarantee admission or visa outcomes.

If a course page uses case-by-case wording, email admissions early and keep the written reply in the application file.
