Textbook as Edition:
The Textual Logic and Institutional Practicality of the Nine-Volume Editorial System in Bilingual ESP Course Publishing

教科書作為版本:專業英語雙語教材「九卷之制」的文本學邏輯與制度實用性

A production study of the nine-volume editorial system in bilingual English-for-Specific-Purposes course publishing: drawing on a published legal-English course and an arts-English course in development, the essay argues that the system turns the textbook from a work into an edition, that its volumes function as distribution semantics safeguarding assessment validity, and that its reliability rests on copy-text discipline and a mechanised build pipeline rather than on volume count.

Editorial Abstract

Materials research has long favoured content analysis and user studies; the production of teaching materials remains, in Harwood's phrase, largely a black box. This Chinese-language essay opens that box for one specific editorial form: the nine-volume system now visible in bilingual English-for-Specific-Purposes publishing for Chinese-speaking learners — five learner volumes (student's book, workbook, reader, capstone evidence bundle, bilingual glossary), three controlled instructor volumes (teacher's guide, assessment pack, model responses), one publisher control pack, plus an unnumbered production master and a confidential marking key excluded from retail numbering. Drawing on documentary analysis of two production repositories — the published UK Legal English Intensive Course (Set ISBN 978-1-0666440-4-9) and an anonymised arts-English course in development — the essay advances three claims. First, the system turns the textbook from a work into an edition, converging two lineages of layered text: the jing–zhu–shu commentary architecture of Chinese classical scholarship (with Ruan Yuan's collation records as the ancestor of the publication control pack) and modern single-source publishing engineering (Rockley; DITA). Second, the volumes enact what the essay terms distribution semantics: paratexts in Genette's sense that perform institutional acts — confidentiality boundaries whose logic runs from Song-dynasty examination safeguards to Messick's and Douglas's accounts of assessment validity. Third, a documented governance failure in the developing case — inversion of canonical and derivative text layers — and its subsequent repair through a mechanised build pipeline constitute a natural experiment showing that the system's reliability rests on copy-text discipline, not volume count.
