Editorial Abstract

This article argues that identifying the leading articles of the North-China Herald is not a matter of extracting prominent headlines but of reconstructing the newspaper’s institutional voice across a changing treaty-port media system. It distinguishes the issue-level bibliography already established for 3,811 items dated 3 August 1850 to 19 November 1941 from the article-level corpus still to be built. A rigorous workflow must combine page-layout evidence, genre classification, OCR criticism, source-image verification and transparent metadata. Such a corpus would enable close reading and longitudinal analysis of how commercial interest, diplomatic pressure, municipal government, law and racialised knowledge were converted into editorial claims about public order and China. The article also stresses that the Herald is evidence of a foreign community’s representations and political practices, not a transparent record of China itself.
