What has changed

The St Paul’s School Group brings Durston House and the Shrewsbury House School Trust into a shared not-for-profit group while each prep school retains its identity and leadership.

For boys who may be a good match for St Paul’s School, the Group Charter describes a stewarded pathway with earlier identification, enrichment support, the potential for offers before Year 6, priority opportunities in Year 7 and direct academic support.

Preferred pathway does not mean automatic entry

The Group FAQ is explicit that membership does not confer an automatic right of entry. St Paul’s Prep School remains the sole through-school route whose boys progress directly into Year 9 without reapplying.

Families should therefore distinguish between a preferred assessment and support route, a selective offer, and guaranteed progression. Durston House and Shrewsbury House provide the first two possibilities, not the third.

A four-route planning model

For family planning, the landscape can be understood through four decision points: early Group identification, the open Year 6 process, a supported or priority Year 7 opportunity for suitable Group boys, and the later Year 8 assessment route.

The exact tests, dates and offer conditions remain subject to annual school communications.

What families should check

Ask whether the child is academically and personally suited to St Paul’s, what commitment is attached to an early offer, whether remaining within the Group is a condition, and what options remain if another senior school later becomes a better fit.

The strongest plan is not simply to start test preparation earlier, but to align prep-school choice, registration dates, assessment evidence, interview readiness and the child’s changing interests.
