The corrected answer
A Chinese passport holder seeking the Core Skills stream must have at least one year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field. The experience can be overseas and can be full-time, part-time or casual, but part-time or casual work must add up to at least 12 months of full-time equivalent experience within the five years before application.
A UK company may qualify as an overseas standard business sponsor only for the statutory overseas-business purposes, such as establishing or assisting an Australian operation with overseas connections or fulfilling a contractual obligation. The nomination must still be for a genuine Australian position.
Education experience must match the occupation
Primary School Teacher, Secondary School Teacher and Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher appear on the current CSOL. Listing is only the starting point: the applicant’s work must be in the nominated occupation or at the same skill level in a related field, with duties the same as or closely related to the ANZSCO role.
Teaching-assistant, tutoring, counselling, education administration or management experience is not automatically equivalent to teacher experience. Evidence should describe duties, student age group, hours, dates, pay and the employing institution.
MA Education is not automatically a teaching qualification
Course title alone is not decisive. A generic MA Education may be academic or policy-focused and may not be an accredited initial teacher education qualification. AITSL looks for relevant initial teacher education, professional education studies and supervised teaching practice.
Teacher skills assessment, state or territory registration and subclass 482 visa eligibility are separate questions. Applicants should verify all three before choosing a teacher occupation.
The subclass 485 reality check
A Masters coursework degree can produce a two-year Post-Higher Education Work stream visa only if the applicant meets all current subclass 485 criteria, including the Australian study requirement. That requirement normally means 92 weeks of registered study completed in Australia over at least 16 calendar months.
A one-year MA Education by itself will therefore usually be insufficient. Other eligible Australian study may sometimes be combined, but credit, overlap, CRICOS registration and physical study time must be checked carefully.
