Eligibility depends on the institution, exact programme, application dates, study record, language, any field requirement and passport validity.
Bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates need English CLB 7 or French NCLC 7 and have no field-of-study requirement. Other university programmes generally require CLB/NCLC 7; college, polytechnic and other non-university programmes generally require CLB/NCLC 5.
Where the study-permit application was submitted on or after 1 November 2024, applicable non-degree programmes normally need an eligible field of study, checked by six-digit CIP code. The eligible-field list is frozen for 2026.
A qualifying master's degree of at least eight months can support a three-year PGWP even when the programme is under two years. Other programmes of eight months to under two years may receive up to the programme length; programmes of two years or more may receive up to three years, subject to passport validity and other rules.
Check the DLI on the official list, then the exact programme's PGWP status, then the applicant's language, CIP, full-time study, Canadian-study share, timing and other personal conditions.
